Tuesday, August 8, 2017

(SACRAMENTO) – Speaker Anthony Rendon has appointed Assemblymember Raul Bocanegra (D-Pacoima) to fill a vacancy on the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Board (SMMC). Over the past three decades, the SMMC has helped to preserve, protect, and restore more than 72,000 acres of parkland in Southern California.

“I thank Speaker Anthony Rendon for appointing me to the Board, which does important work to preserve and protect parkland and open space in the Los Angeles-region,” said Assemblymember Bocanegra. “Their work to ensure that disadvantaged communities have access to venues for outdoor recreation and education provides a crucial public benefit, topics I’ve worked on for several years in the Northeast San Fernando Valley.”

Since 1980, SMMC has partnered with local and federal agencies, landowners, and community based organizations to purchase and enhance open spaces to form an interlinking system of urban, rural and river parks, open space, trails, and wildlife habitats that are easily accessible to the general public. In addition to managing open space, parklands, watersheds, and wildlife habitats, the Board oversees land acquisitions, options to purchase, land disposals, and other property transactions. It awards grants and interest-free loans to cities, counties, and recreation and park districts for restoration of lands.

"We are thrilled about Assemblyman Bocanegra’s appointment to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy Board. He has worked on the re-envisioning and revitalization of the LA River’s tributaries for years now. His seat on the board will help ensure there is equity when it comes to planning and resources for the Tujunga and Pacoima Washes. The Assemblymember will be an excellent voice for us and the entire San Fernando Valley." said Veronica Padilla-Campos, Executive Director of Pacoima Beautiful.

“I am eager to roll up my sleeves and be the voice of the San Fernando Valley and the tributaries of the Los Angeles River to ensure our communities are well represented” added Assemblymember Bocanegra.

Raul Bocanegra represents the 39th Assembly District in the California State Assembly.  He represents the Northeast San Fernando Valley, including the Los Angeles communities of Arleta, Granada Hills, Lakeview Terrace, Mission Hills, North Hollywood, Pacoima, Shadow Hills, Sun Valley, Sunland-Tujunga, Sylmar and the City of San Fernando.
