California has experienced significant increases in the size, severity, and impacts of wildfires. A recent Federal Emergency Management Agency survey reported that individuals with wildfire preparedness awareness are five times more likely to take at least three of the 12 recommended preparedness actions compared to those without awareness. Staying informed about the latest wildfire preparedness resources and information is crucial to ensure the safety of our community.
In response to these challenges, I have compiled essential resources to help you stay informed and ready in the event of a wildfire:
- CAL FIRE Incident Information: For the latest updates on fires near you, including containment status, evacuation orders, and road closures, please visit the CAL FIRE website. CAL FIRE also provides regular updates on their social media channels. Here is their LinkTree.
- Local News Outlets: Stayed informed with real-time updates from local news stations and newspapers. They often provide valuable information on wildfire developments in the area.
- Emergency Alerts: Ensure you're signed up for alerts through platforms like Nixle and SJReady. To sign up for Nixle updates, text your zip code to 888777 to opt in. You can also visit the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) system and be prepared for any disasters before they happen. These alerts will send evacuation notices and other important updates directly to your phone.
- Air Quality Information: Monitor air quality in your area, as wildfires can significantly impact air quality. Websites like airnow.gov offer real-time air quality updates.
- Community Resources: Engage with community resources such as Facebook groups or Nextdoor. These platforms can provide additional support and information during wildfire events. Please prioritize information from official sources to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Weather Information: To monitor weather conditions, visit the National Weather Service and enter your zip code.
- Prepare an Emergency Go-Bag: Prepare an evacuation bag for every person in your household before a wildfire, keep it easily accessible. Plan to be away from your home for an extended period. Please make bags light enough to be able to lift in your vehicle.
- Prepare Safe Zones Ahead of Time: Review what to do when trapped by an approaching wildfire when you are near your home, inside a vehicle, or outside.
- Insurance Coverage: For assistance with your insurance information, contact the Department of Insurance Hotline at (800) 927-4357. You can also find insurance companies and licensed agents in your area by visiting the home insurance finder website.
In addition to staying informed, you can get ready for wildfire by:
- Maintaining adequate defensible space.
- Hardening your home.
- Incorporating fire smart landscaping.
- Reviewing seasonal actions you can take to reduce your wildfire risk.
